Repeating Patterns with Nature

We have done a lot of repeating pattern work in Room 9 this year. Today I would like you to collect some nature and practice make some patterns!

The easiest patterns are repeating patterns that go in a straight line.

Start by making a basic abab pattern with your nature bits. Parents: your child should know what this means. It is a pattern that repeats itself with a core of two different objects. If they don't know what it means, begin the pattern and your child extend it.

I have made the core of the pattern bold in the letter patterns below. We have talked a lot about how the core of the pattern is the smallest part that repeats itself over and over again.
*** the JKs and many SKs might not be ready to identify the core! If they don't seem to understand, that is okay, please just let them play and experiment with patterns!

Pinecone, Leaf, Pinecone, Leaf, Pinecone, Leaf, Pinecone, Leaf.
abababab (the core is pinecone, leaf or ab)

Flower, leaf, pinecone, flower, leaf, pinecone
abcabc (the core is flower, leaf, pinecone or abc)

Flower, Flower, Leaf, Leaf, Flower, Flower, Leaf, Leaf
aabbaabb (the core is flower, flower, leaf, leaf or  aabb)

What other patterns can you make? Can you start one and have your parent extend it?
