Thinking About Homes

Our home is where we live. Why do we need a home? Another word for our home is a shelter. Shelter means "protect". What do our homes protect us from? (The weather - rain, snow, wind, sun; the temperature - heat or cold; insects and animals; )

Read along to We Were Tired of Living in a House by Leisel Skorpon.
The children left their house in search of another place to live. Did their new homes shelter them very well? They all looked like fun places to play in for a short time, but maybe not live forever!

Home, by Carson Ellis, shows some real and imaginary homes!

What are some different kinds of homes that people live in? Why do you think that people live in different kinds of homes?

Make a list!

(The children should try to do some or all of the writing for this list! They should try to write the sounds that they hear. Tent might be TNT. Boat might be BOT, etc.
(Parents, you might want to give some hints so your child can include some of these on the list(3-6 is fine). BUT! This is the child's list! If they don't know what it is, it shouldn't be on their list :) (house, apartment building, tent, igloo, cabin, cottage, trailer, skyscraper, houseboat, boat house, boat, shack, mobile home, yurt, hotel, tour bus, camper, walk-up, condo, townhouse, church, coach house, cave, chalet, adobe house, co-op, tiny home, mansion, castle, villa, palace, duplex, fort, underground house, tree house, dome house, floating house, a car....)

We have a bonus book today! In No Place Like Home, Bear needs to find a proper home for himself.
