Word Family "im"

Let's try the word Family "im"

Please remember that some of the JK's might not know their letter sounds yet (and that's okay, and as it should be -- it is developmental!). We can still do word family work and focus on naming the letter as well as the sound before we put the letter to the word family ending. For example:
"This is a t, it makes the sound t, t, t. Can you make that sound? Now put that t sound at the front of "im" -- t,im; tim.

Nonsense words are fine! You can ask your child if they think it is a real word or a nonsense, or silly word.

Morning Message for Wednesday, June 3

Watch Ms. Brown's Message to you HERE!

Before you read the message you need go outside and decide what the weather and what the temperature is! Is it Sunny? Cloudy? Rainy? Windy? Cold? Cool? Warm? Hot?  Where the blank space is in the message, you have to say what the weather is or how the temperature feels.

Mackenzie! You are our helper! You can take the attendance to the office :) Mackenzie, you can write the names of the people who are home right now and bring your paper to someone else. Even your sister! Write the names in rainbow letters - each letter of the name should be a different colour! You need to be extra helpful today. What will you do?

Who is today's Mystery Friend ?
Clue #1. Our mystery friend has a c somewhere in their name.
Clue #2.  Our mystery friend has an e somewhere in their name.
Clue #3.  Our mystery friend has an l somewhere in their name.
Who is our mystery friend? You will often find our friend building with Lego or snap cubes!

A-Z of Nature

Today I would like you to go for a walk and be observant. What do you see in nature?

Take a piece of paper and write the alphabet down the side and middle like this (parents might want to help, it took me three tries to fit the alphabet on one page) (This might be a time for lined paper):

Now, you can walk around your garden, or go for a walk somewhere with your parents. Try to fill in your list with natural things that you see. Beside each letter, write the word.
If you see a Ladybug, where would you write ladybug? beside the L ! If you saw some grass, where would that go? Under the G!

You should look up high and look down low. High into trees, and under rocks or branches.

Take a picture of some of the things that you find.

We are going to try something new with the photographs.

Parents! You can try to load them right into our Google Slides. I have set up a slideshow of A-Z  at a link that I have emailed you. It is fully editable, so please don't delete other people's photos. Please put your (child's) name on the page!
e.g.
L is for Ladybug
by Ms. Brown.

If you can't figure it out, or don't want to try it :), don't worry:  just email me the photo.

This is good practice for parents and children as you/ they will likely be using Google Classroom, Google Sites, Google Slides or Brightspace with their teacher next year.

Keep working on your Alphabet all week!

Pride Month!

Red: A Crayon's Story by Michael Hall

Red has a bright red label, but inside, Red is actually blue. Red is sad. He really wants to be red, but he cannot - no matter how hard he tries. Lots of other crayons tried to fix him. With a friends help, Red discovers something. He is blue!

Sometimes you have to have the courage to look inside and be proud of who you really are!

Listen and watch Ms. Brown read a short book about differences and being proud of who you are.

What are you proud of? Are you proud of your cool new glasses? Are you proud that you can now ride a 2 wheel bike after so much practicing? Are you proud that you read and read and read, and now you can read harder books?

Draw a picture of something that you can do that makes you proud!
I am proud that___________

-------------------------------------------------

June is Pride Month, when people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and other gender-fluid designations celebrate their diversity and strengths.

Why is Pride Month so important? Because for most of history, LGBTQ people faced ridicule, discrimination, and even violence due to their sexual orientation. Until very recently, LGBTQ people were not allowed to marry someone they love. While they still face discrimination and other obstacles today, LGBTQ citizens enjoy many more rights and freedoms thanks to many people who stood up for others and spoke out against discrimination.

Parents: We have discussed different kinds of families already in class. We have talked about having two moms or two dads and many different family makeups. We focused on love being the most important part of a family!

Feel free to teach these words if your child is ready. I would have taught them in class, and just left them as the definitions here and I would have answered the children's questions (there aren't usually any!)

Words to know:

Gender – Typically, gender is the state of being male or female, though some people identify as non-gendered or both genders.

Gay – A man who loves other men
Lesbian – A woman who loves other women
Bisexual – A person who loves members of both sexes
Transgender – A person whose gender identity (how they feel inside) is different from their body’s gender

Try It!

Today I would like you to design a Pride Flag. You r flag should show that you are proud of who you are! (Red should be proud of being blue!)

Pride flags often have rainbows on them, but they don't have to have Rainbows.

You need to think up some words or a sentence to put on your flag (A "slogan")

It could say:

I am proud of myself!

I am brave.

Last year, we made Flags that said "Be Brave, Be Bold, Be You!"

Take a regular piece of paper and cut it in half.

Write your "slogan" on it

Colour it

Attach a straw or a stick for a handle.

Wave your flag proudly!

Morning Message for Monday, June 1

Watch Ms. Brown's Message to you HERE!

Today is the first day of June!
Today is the beginning of 30 Days Wild!
We are going to try to do one "wild" thing outside every day. Today I would like you to begin a wildlife notebook (or paper) for the month. Make a list of all of the animals that you can see from your window. This will be a "growing" list because you can add the new animals that you see each day. Only add each animal once! (if you see a squirrel today, then squirrel is on the list and you can't write squirrel again tomorrow). Let's see who can see the most animals in June! Remember, bugs are animals. If you have a notebook, you could add one animal per page and draw a picture of each one!

Before you read the message you need go outside and decide what the temperature is! Is it Cold? Cool? Warm? Hot?  Where the blank space is in the message, you have to say how the temperature feels.

Genny! You are our helper! You can take the attendance to the office :) Genny, you can write the names of the people who are home right now and bring your paper to someone else. Even Popcorn! Write the names in Rainbow letters. That means you can write each letter in a different colour. You need to be extra helpful today. What will you do?

Who is today's Mystery Friend ?
Clue #1. Our mystery friend has 2 letter i's somewhere in their name.
Clue #2.  Our mystery friend has an n somewhere in their name.
Who is our mystery friend? You will often find our friend at the Dramatic Play Centre!

Make a Board Game!

Have you ever tried to make your own board game? I know that Genny has!
This is Genny's board game!

We have played Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and Snakes and Ladders in our classroom. Candyland doesn't involve any counting - it is a good introduction to board games at the beginning of jk,  but we are all ready for a game that involves counting!
Snakes and Ladders and Chutes and Ladders.

A super-cool game would be snakes and ladders combined with Candyland. Traveling through an imaginary world, but playing the game with dice. LETS MAKE ONE!

Think about it before you start.

1. What kind of world do you want your game to be set in? Superheros? LOL Dolls? Fairyland? Unicorn Land? A Forest or Jungle? Outer Space or in a Star Wars world? Choose something that you like best!
I am choosing The Three Little Pigs theme for my gameboard!

2. Choose your playing pieces. Most board games are for 2-4 players. You might want to make enough so your whole family can play.
I am making 3. The Three Little Pigs. I taped some little paper pigs on to little bamboo pieces. You might choose some small stones, or some cereal box cardboard.  Make sure that the stones are small enough to fit in the squares on the path.

3. Draw your "path", or use the one that I sent you. You can have a shortcut if you want. If you land on # 10 in my game, it is the shortcut to #16- it gets you closer the brick house. You can have a "go back" square in your game.  In my game, if you land on #8  (THE WOLF SCARES YOU) you have to run away and go back to the #3. Parents -- if your child is able to add two dice easily, you might consider making your own path so your playing board can go to at least 40 or even 100! You can use a large piece of paper or bristol board.

4. What is at the END of the path? It should be something exciting. My Pigs are racing to get to the brick house!  Yours might go to a castle or a special planet or space station.

5. Write numbers on your path. One number for each square.  If you use the one that I gave you , the numbers should go from 1-18. If you don't know the numbers up to 18, have your parents help or look at YOUR NUMBER LINE.

6. You need a dice or a dice app! If you use the printable gameboard that I sent, you will use one dice. If you made a really long path, you might want to use 2 dice and add them together.

7. Play your game! you will need a partner to play :) I am giving my gameboard to my Grandson who turns 4 in June! Do you think he will like it?

*** you might want to start with a simple game. Once you have made one, then you can make a longer, more complicated game afterwards.
