Before flying home, the Flat Friends listened to some aboriginal music. Flat Angry Bird was lucky enough to pose with her new friend! He actually knew all about the Flat Stanley project! It is a big world, yet such a small world.

Flat Friends at the Sydney Opera House!

Why a poem about frogs?

We have tadpoles in the class! They are quite small -- and are actually toad tadpoles -- not frog tadpoles. Many of them already have back legs. Some have back legs and front legs but they still have their tails. We have a platform in the aquarium. just in case they are ready to climb out. Ask you child about our tadpoles. Ask them what the tadpoles eat. What will they eat when they change into toads (or frogs)? We are studying The Needs of Living things (Grade1) and Animal Life Cycles (Grade 2)

To make the soil right.
I set the pot upon the sill,
Where the sun would give it light.
I checked the pot most every day,

Flat L visits London Ontario

 We had a new student join Room 15 after we had mailed off the other Flat Friends. She still made a Flat Stanley and called her Flat L! She came home with Ms. Brown and Ms. Brown took her to visit London, Ontario, where Ms. Brown grew up.

(we are focusing on y -- when it is making the vowel sound "ee") These words are tricky, and a bit advanced for the Grade 1's, but I think that they are ready for it! 

Materials, Objects and Structures

 We had a Scientist visit the Grade 1 students. (The Grade 2 Students will have their Scientist visit on May 9) Scientist Karin taught us all about Materials, Objects and Structures. A huge thank you to the parents who helped! We honestly cannot do it without you.

We learned that OBJECTS are made out of MATERIALS, and that materials have different properties.

We learned that there are 3 main purposes for structures 
1) To SUPPORT a load (chairs, desks, shelves)
2) To SPAN a gap (bridge, doors, windows, stairs)
3) To ENCLOSE or CONTAIN a person or object (Houses, bins, backpacks)

We built some structures

We learned that FASTENERS hold materials or structures together.

We learned the best way to build a structure so that it will be strong:

We worked as a group to build stools!

We learned that cylinders are the strongest shapes for supporting structures, and that many cylinders together are very strong.

Our stools are in our classrooms now. They are very strong. Even Ms. Brown can sit on them :)

Flat Friends in Sydney Harbour!

Our Flat Friends had so much fun in Sydney -- here they are visiting Sydney Harbour!

Oops! They missed the water taxi! Well, they will just have to wait for the next one....

Meanwhile, Flat Matthew poses for a photo - op in front of the bridge.

And Flat Angry Bird is very pleased that her outfit matches this boat!
